Which disks to choose for your configurations ?
Please accept our experience:
A 2.5” 10.000 rpm is faster than a 3.5” 15.000 rpm. A 7200 rpm 2.5” is faster than a 10.000 rpm 3.5”. Etc.
We predicted for two years that someday the price per TB of 2.5” disks would be the same or lower that their 3.5” equivalents. That is finally happening now!
So up to 1 TB in SATA-II you can choose the 5900 rpm versions in 2.5” to replace the 3.5” 7200 rpm versions, or the 7200 rpm versions to replace the 10.000 rpms in 3.5”. etc.
AND that will give you the same bandwidth, but better AAT. AND they use less power! All the servers in the mailing have SAS controllers, so you can mix SAS and SATA drives in the same machine.
The drives that we suggest below are –of course- NOT exhaustive: there are other choices possible. Please give us more info about the nature of use of your desired machine, and we’ll adapt!!
Database:
These are generally small, and need the best possible Average Access Time.
So: the best solution is SSD (AAT less than 1 MS)

Second best for your database: 2.5” 15.000 rpm.(AAT 30 to 50 Ms)
You can use SAS2 or SATA3 drives here: AAT is much more important than bandwidth.

Intensive use data:
The data that everybody works with during the day. AAT is important, but bandwidth is even more important.
We advise SAS 2, 2.5” disks for this, 6 GB transferspeed, FAST access times.

Volume data:
Up to 1TB we can use 2.5” disks, but for the biggest volumes, 3.5” remains the best solution for the moment:
2TB disks don’t exist yet in 2.5”. SATA-3 is sufficient here.
